Soni Plateau

2022-09-12

I visited the Soni plateau located on the border of Nara and Mie prefectures. It is the place covered by wild pampas grass around the wetland called Okame-ike. It was the first visit for me. I went by a car loading a foldable bicycle, but there is no path to get around by a bike because only walking is allowed over dirt roads and dirt steps. The field was much larger than I expected. I thought I could reach the top of the mountain on foot following the slope, but I climbed halfway up and turned back.

Many swallows were flying (can be seen in the upper right corner).

After climbing halfway up the mountain, I looked back then could see the panoramic view of the plateau.

In autumn, the pampas grass turns yellow and should be beautiful. I’m sure to come back and by a motorcycle next time.

During walking the path, I met many red dragonflies, grasshoppers, and seldom seen robber flies. They relaxed me also.

The picture below is the Fujiwara Palace ruins on my way home. Not the Soni plateau, but the blue sky and white clouds on a hot late summer day were very impressive for me.
